Capital Cross Classic with bells on!

so BIG NEWS! We now have PROTEUS COWBELLS!

Capital Cross Classic was COLD. very COLD. No euro-style mud fests though.

5 riders wearing proteus green

CJ had a great race and placed 5th or 6th.
Yo took first place in the women's single speed division!
Rene had a great race in spite of the 1 year gap between this one and his last one.

The "high drama" moment of the day (for us anyway) involved 2 mechanicals. Chris had some shifting problems and I had some "wheel issues" and as a result, I rode about half a lap with no front brakes. We figured out that 2 partially functioning bikes made one fully functional bike and we had another MILESTONE in the legacy that is the proteus cyclocross team. OUR FIRST USAGE OF THE PIT. Chris met me in the pit and gave me his wheel. Giving Chris my bike would be pretty funny because he's about twice my height :) . I was pretty far back at that point, but I'm 100% certain that if I hadn't had that mechanical that I would have made the podium.

pics as they become available.

Chris Flies Solo!!!

So this weekend two proteus riders were signed up to race in taneytown and one punked out. The one that didn't got to ride a pretty cool course. The one that did, hung out with his wife and wrote about it on this blog.

Chris wrote up a pretty thorough race report here. Pictures, videos, all sorts of good stuff. You'd never know that this was only his second race! here are some of the pics taken by his girlfriend Allison:

Next week is the Capital Cross Classic. No punking out on this one!

Photos / practice wrap up

Here's a couple pics. There are more here.
Photos from Cynthia's Camera, taken by Tom M.

Practice last night was a group of 3. Josh, Kevin M, and myself. It was more of a social event than a practice (lap, chat, lap, chat, lap, chat) but you need those every so often. Mountain biking this weekend and race post-thanksgiving.

Race Pace CX Report

Wow.
Today's race was a great day. I did pretty poorly but I don't even care because Proteus was represented SIX RIDERS DEEP.

oddly enough, last year, this course was a little boring, but this year it was super technical.
flat pavement into a sustained low grade hill, fast right and up a hill and straight back down fast right around a field. Off camber into a run-up and back down a tight hill. flat for a bit until we hit a drop and a small hill. the thrilling portion before the finish was a bizarre undulating off camber thing with a ditch that took out a lot of riders.

  • Cynthia killed it with a 4th place finish.
  • Yo made a triumphant return rocking a bianchi roger.
  • Josh rode hard as always
  • Chris made an in-sane debut into cross racing with a top 20 finish. I was pretty excited when he lapped me.
  • Greg also gave 'cross a try for the first time on a borrowed mountain bike in a borrowed jersey.
  • I was there too.
next week is an off week and hopefully we'll have a similar turnout in two weeks for the MABRA state champs in Taneytown.

Pictures will go up as they become available. Above is actually a picture of CJ ripping it up at Tacchino last week.

Josh at the race.

Here' s Josh. He raced hard this weekend. I think he pulled 40th?

Here's a picture of the race in general. If you look closely you can see me and my costume.

And last but not least, Here's Dale (looking sharp in his new jersey, Jim (a different Jim), and Kevin enjoying the post race festivities.

OK, the images seem to be coming up not where I thought they would, but I'm sure you can all figure it out.

DC CX wrap up and this week's practice.

Halloween is way too fun. No practice this week. Perhaps we can switch it to Thursday, maybe it will just get bagged.

DCCX was a lot of fun. Long hard course. 3 people racing in Proteus Jerseys: Josh, Dale, and Jim. also a lot of people from the Wed. night practices.

Why don't any of the races here look like this????

The Rain, The mud, the singlespeeds, the grit, the grime, the crud, the sludge

It looks like fun. Most of our races seem don't quite hit this level.

Last night we had our wed. night practice and they were the worst weather conditions I have ever ridden in (for cross, not counting long road rides where the sky happened to open up and dump on you). It was pretty fun.

4 people showed up.
josh, kevin, chris, jim

Hopefully the rain will keep pounding us until Sunday so DCCX will look like one of those races from the northwest.

cross practice report

I thought I was going to be k-solo for a while. I wanted to stay visible but start riding and I managed to find a separate little loop that is all on grass/dirt and is all within plain view of the comcast center. oddly enough, it is fairly technical, a tight turn around a tree, an off camber descent with some loose dirt, and some darkness. It's about .4 miles long.

kevin showed up and we monkeyed with his headset for a bit and then took off, in the end it was 3 laps of the regular loop with the mini loop added in (also made for 3 additional trips up the big hill).

josh, collin, mark, jim

3 warm up laps.
1 race
two people leave
1 more race.

road construction on 95 North on the way home. yuck.

Jersey Orders!

Round two of the jersey orders went out last week. Unfortunately it's a 6 week turnaround time. That means jerseys will be ready by late november in time for a few races.

we still have some size small and extra small at the shop so if that describes you, you can still pick one up.

I might be able to tack one or two more on, so if you want to pick one up, let me know ASAP.
